I Am Not Intolerant Just Because I’m A Christian

This whole Phil Robertson controversy has got me a little miffed and baffled.

Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty.

Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty.

There is a great debate on Facebook and the internet with two opposing sides: Christians and the rest of the world. And I probably will lose friends over this (and for that I am deeply sorrowful), but I have to stand for what I believe is true. I know most of you won’t read this to the end and that you will not want to read the Bible scriptures, but I implore you to do so. Please hear me out before you label me a racist and a hater of people.

I read the article that quoted the Phil Robertson, although crudely, testifying to what he believes is true. It is his faith and his belief, but because he said it out loud, he is a bad person. I am not a fan of the show, but I do respect the family for showing their faith in a world where being a Christian is so badly portrayed in Hollywood.

The big catch word that is being thrown around is TOLERANCE. Everyone is claiming that Phil Robertson and in fact, all Christians who testify to God’s word, are intolerant.

Tolerance is not practiced equally amongst anyone.

Tolerance is not practiced equally amongst anyone.

I am a Christian. And with that proclamation I testify that I believe in God’s word – the Bible. The Bible is not GREY; it is BLACK AND WHITE. I cannot pick and choose what to believe in it; I have to believe all or none if I adhere to my belief that it is the true spoken WORD OF GOD.

If I claim to be a Christian than I MUST proclaim God's WORD.

If I claim to be a Christian than I MUST proclaim God’s WORD.

I may not always like what it says, especially when it is pointing out one of my many faults, but I have to continue to believe it and proclaim it. Where I get into trouble is not always proclaiming it in His love. And for that I apologize and ask the forgiveness of anyone I’ve hurt. But I will not apologize for God’s word.

GOD IS LOVE. He LOVES all people, but he HATES all sin; no matter what it is. But God is also the God of Judgement, and he will judge all of us – the sinners (which IS all of us) and especially those who stood by and said and did nothing against the sins of this world. It is important to mention that not all people claiming to be Christians do this part right. I have already mentioned that I have failed in this area many time. We are instructed to proclaim His truths in Love, not like people  from cults like Westboro Baptist Church who spout nothing but hate.

NO WHERE IN GOD'S WORD DOES IT TELL US TO BEHAVE THIS WAY! I APOLOGIZE FOR ALL CHRISTIANS WHEN I SEE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR.

NO WHERE IN GOD’S WORD DOES IT TELL US TO BEHAVE THIS WAY! I APOLOGIZE FOR ALL CHRISTIANS WHEN I SEE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR.

I think it is interesting that anyone can blast Christian’s beliefs, but if you speak God’s truth, you will be labeled a racist, a hater and a liar. I actually read someone’s post about Phil Robertson that said, “some rich egotistical, bigoted moron who hides behind bible scripture as justification for saying whatever he wants.”

So, let me get this right; if I quote God’s word, I’m a bigot, a hater and a liar? How is this tolerant? How is this fair to labeled me (because I too believe theses scriptures) this way, that person doesn’t even know me?

I can be a Christian as long as I only practice the love part of God’s word and not telling of the truth? When I succumb to that pressure is when you can call me a liar.

God Never leaves us or forsakes us, no matter what we do.

God Never leaves us or forsakes us, no matter what we do.

The world is claiming that those of us who speak the truths out of God’s word are not practicing God’s love because we are intolerant. That is far from true. I know many people who choose a homosexual lifestyle. I in no way accept their choices, but I do not hate them or persecute them for it. Instead I pray for them. Same goes for anyone living an adulterous lifestyle – I do not hate them or shun them. Society says these particular lifestyles are okay, and that everyone has a right to his or her own beliefs.

Everyone except the Christian.

Case in point, I was abused by my own father, and although I HATED what was done to me and I HATED the abuse, I did not hate my father – or even my mother. In fact, I loved them and through God’s help I forgave them and was able to see them ask forgiveness for their sins and become one of His children and will one day be reunited with them in Heaven.

You might say, well this is child abuse and that is wrong. But that is because it is socially unacceptable and it was done to a child. But 20 years ago living a homosexual lifestyle was socially unacceptable and 20 years before that, the act of adultery was socially unacceptable. Who is to say that 20 years from now, sexual acts with children won’t be accepted. Perhaps in that time, people who speak out against that will be called haters and racist.

There are no scriptures that speak directly against child abuse, but we all know in our core that it is wrong. It is wrapped up in the scriptures about adultery and murder, but we know it to mean you should not do it.

Romans 13:8-10 says, “For the commandments, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet, and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

The closet scriptures that I found concerning children speak of causing them to sin because of an action (Mark 9:42) and provoking them to the point of discouragement (Colossians 3:21). But there are several that speak directly against other behaviors.

Romans 1:26-28,  says, “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

And in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: “Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

This last verse list homosexual behavior with all other sins and it is important to note that GOD HATES SIN, NOT PEPOLE. He hates when we sin, but he does not hate us, and He is always ready to forgive us and gives us a way out, but it requires turning away from that particular sin and living daily by His laws.

In fact, He wanted us to be forgiven so much that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to come to this Earth, to be persecuted, killed, and sent to Hell all for our sins. The good news is that Jesus overcame our sins and death and rose again so that all of us would have the opportunity to live an eternal life with God! (John 3:16 paraphrased.) The problem is, is that none of us want to think about, let alone be called a sinner. But that is what we ALL are.

Jesus Christ died so I and every other person on Earth could be forgiven for any sin.

Jesus Christ died so I and every other person on Earth could be forgiven for any sin.

Are Christians perfect?

No, but then again, who is?

All I ask is for a bit of that same tolerance that others scream about be applied to my right (and to Phil’s) to speak about my God and His truths.

I know it won’t happen, and I’m okay with that, but don’t expect me to remain quiet.

You are right, in todays society you may loose friends over your beliefs. But better to do that, that not see the glory of God in the end. I choose God, and yes I am a sinner, I have done bad things, but I try to do better. Because I accept what is right and what is wrong, and avoid the wrong. I wish those I love would just see this and do the same, but they also tell me they do not want to hear. Even families make you stop talking about the bible.

Wait, so, you believe slavery is acceptable? If you believe all of the bible, than by default, you believe slavery is acceptable.

No, I don’t. The Bible isn’t about slavery. Yes, there were slaves in the Bible, but there was also a lot of other atrocities. The Bible doesn’t say that slavery is okay, It says “All men are created equal and Not to be a respecter of people.” James 2;10 Which means that you shouldn’t judge people because of their color of skin, standing in the community or parentage. A large part of the Bible, including the mention of slaves is history. By the way, God’s chosen people were the ones that were enslaved.
I am Russian/German whose family was put in Auschwitz Concentration camp, so I am no stranger to the horrible things PEOPLE will do to other people. But I believe that everyone has a right to their opinions and beliefs without the fear of condemnation, which is why I’m approving your comment. This is about not being labeled a bigot, racist or hate monger just because I believe what the Bible says is true. I’m also an American who has the same right as you to express those feelings. I do not hate you for your beliefs, I just wish the same could be said for others who don’t believe as I do.

This is the kind of answer that more people should be able to give. I am so frustrated by people who approach an article like this one, with hate and looking for an argument. I have the firm belief that we will all have to answer for every moment of our lives, at the end of days… It’s not my job to judge but God will judge. I am responsible for my life and actions just as you are for yours. I commend you for writing this as it expresses my thoughts almost to a T. Thank you for your bravery and yes, your tolerance.

Thank you so much G.G. Your words really mean a lot to me. What people don’t realize is that I have some very special acquaintances and friends that are living these types of lifestyles. I don’t hate them, I want to see them live eternally in heaven; so it makes me sad to see them reject God. I could never be angry about that. I do get angry when people attack me, but God had a talk with me about that and let me know, “It’s not about me.” 🙂 Have a Very Merry Christmas.

I don’t think that the bible says “slavery” is OK insomuch as it tells you the plight of the Isrealite people in history according to the Word of God. Is that history True? Yes I believe it is an accurate telling of history. But I don’t believe slavery is right. In fact some of the biggest organizations today fighting to save women and children caught in the global slave trading industry are Christian based.

I do not believe in any kind of slavery either. I’ve always been for the underdog, the oppressed. I can’t fathom how any one person could mistreat another person. We are all human beings.

Had to explain all this to a friend as well, and it was really struggling to see him take his own beliefs and pick and choose what to believe in the bible… all the while saying “Christians, choose either to believe the 600+ commandments in the Old Testament, or believe Jesus’s two commandments”. I understand that the 2 cover all, so his pick and choose argument was irrelevant. He used the same argument as Roseeaf@yahoo.com used. Quoting Leviticus saying that if you should not shave therefore if you have ever shaved you have sinned. I know how utterly ridiculous the argument is, but he kept coming up with atheist arguments I have already fought before. Such as “So why does God create transgender people?” and “If God told you to kill a child, would you do it?”

How do do you combat someone who chooses to fight and not listen? How do you answer those questions over and over again?

Too many times people will start to understand that you are a Christian through conversation, and suddenly they are making snide remarks about “Bible thumpers” and “Holy Rollers.” So many people that take these stands on Christianity are the ones that know in their hearts that God exists and that He loves them, but they have turned from Him. Sometimes they can be talked to, but most times they just ridicule and poke fun, drawing others into it. Sadly that is the way it is…more now than ever.
Stand strong with your faith…We may not be a majority, but we are enough to make the Word of God be heard.

I find it degrading that because I choose to believe differently than a Christian, the Christian in turn feels a responsibility to “pray for me.” You see, I live my life in accordance with the key principles preached by Jesus himself–love, care, compassion, respect–but I am not a Christian. In fact, I am an atheist. All around me, I see self-proclaimed “Christians” who engage in premarital sex, eat food strictly prohibited in the scripture, are cruel to peers, never bother to give to the poor and hungry, the list goes on–and yet, time and time again, these same individuals try to convince me that I will be a better person if I start showing up at their church services. They tell me that they are forgiven because they have accepted Jesus as their savior. How convenient: They sin as they so choose, but because they’ve accepted Jesus, the gates of heaven are open and waiting.

Christians of this nation need to accept that their personal beliefs should not and will not dictate how everybody else can live. It’s unfortunate that many of them are so deeply bothered by the acts that occur in other people’s bedrooms. To put it bluntly, and I don’t mean this offensively, mind your own business. Stop praying to change me from an atheist and stop praying to change how homosexuals live their lives. If I prayed, I wouldn’t ask God for you all to stop being Christians, I’d just pray for you to leave the rest of us alone!

I mean all of this with no disrespect, and I hope you bother to give my viewpoint at least a brief thought. Have a wonderful holiday season.

Jennifer, I am sorry you feel that way, and if it bothers you, I will not say I will pray for you anymore. I wish more so called Christians would live by the same principals you hold dear; and you are so right that many that claim Christianity are living a life without the influence of the namesake – Christ. Accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior is NOT a “get out of jail” free card. It is not a license to do what you want without consequences.
You see, in order to “accept” Jesus Christ we must do a couple things. First, we have to admit that we are a sinner – this is not hard because we all are. No matter how “good” we try to be, we have either lied, stolen, talked bad about someone, lived in adultery, done drugs, murdered (even with our mind) or a numerous other things that separate us from God. One of those things – in accordance to the Bible, which I believe is a supernatural book, ordained by God himself – that is very specifically mentioned is homosexual relations. But that is a moot point if you are atheist, so I’ll go on.
Not only do we have to admit that we are a sinner, then we have to “want” to be forgiven and more specifically want to turn away from that sin. Now, this is where the problem lies. Although God forgives us without any conditions, we will still be sinners. We are not turned into superheros incapable of sinning. BUT to continue to choose to live in that sin either means we never truly asked for forgivness and are not really a Christian or we are choosing to live a very harmful and unsatisfactory Christian life. Personally, I believe the first.
When we ask forgiveness, then we ask Jesus to come into our hearts and clean house so to speak. At this point, something happens at our core – or at least it did for me. Did I become perfect? NO BY NO MEANS IS THIS EVEN CLOSE TO TRUE. I start everyday asking for forgiveness for what harm I may have caused my own relationship or someone elses. You might think this is a terrible way to live, but its not all condemnation and fear. No in fact, I live more free from those things today than I did before. I used to be so full of despair and fear that I wanted to end my life. Now with Jesus’s help, I have the strenghth to keep going each and every day.
Next, and this is what sets real Christians apart from those just going through the motions – you have to live a victorious life. That means letting the LOVE of God guide all your actions and reactions to daily issues. And its not a dos and don’t list that I go by everyday, its more of how I am now governed. Before, I would verbally or physically attack anyone who criticized me or got angry with me. (and I have to admit, some days I might still not respond with the kindest attitude,) but I try and that is all I can do.
The difference is in the trying. Just because an alcoholic accepts Jesus Christ as his savior doesn’t mean he will be miraculously cured – some are – but not all. It also doesn’t mean that person will never slip back into the a drinking problem again. But the difference is in the want to. When Christ touches our hearts, we want to be better, be more like Him. After all that is the definition of Christian – Little Christ.
Christians do accept that our personal beliefs should not dictate how everybody else lives, but the same could be true for everyone else. Why must your lifestyle dictate what I can choose to believe in or speak about. If you are truly open and honest you will see that it is socially acceptable for everyone no matter their life choices to speak out on their lifestyles – everyone except Christians. This is in fact, the bases of this article. Homosexual rights are everywhere, in the news, on tv and even though I do not agree with those rights, they are their to affect my children and grandchildren and if I try to speak out that I believe these are harmful, then I am labled a racist and a hater. How is this right? I am not deeply bothered by the acts that occur in other people’s bedrooms accept when it bleeds over into every walk of life that is evident for all to see.
Maybe if we all kept our personal physical relationships “private” it wouldn’t cause so much discourse. I don’t want to see or hear about the relationships of any person. That is just TMI!
I’m sorry you feel that way, and if you did pray, you would know that as Christians, we are commanded to pray for others and to tell others about the Love and Forgiveness of God. So if I do as you ask, I am again sinning against what God has asked me to do.
I appreciate your words and have not taken them as disrespect. I am so sorry that “so called” Christians have hurt you. I would love to introduce you to some that truly demonstrate the Love of God.
Merry Christmas Jennifer. Please be safe out there. I don’t know what its doing in your neck of the woods, but it is freezing rain here!

I believe you nailed it Darla. At the core of all of this is – Do I believe in God and His Word or not? Last night I ran into passages that stated, “And God turned them over…” I personally was delivered from a life that was “turned over” 18 years ago (thank you Jesus). I was a slave and He set me free. In my mind that is the worst thing that could happen to me now – that God would take His hand off of me. I live in Utah and my heart breaks over the rejoicing by some of my fb friends due to the SSM ruling. Their intolerance of anything Biblical weighs heavy in my heart. I will continue to lift them up. Thank you for writing this. God bless you and keep you.
